Rescue Women Girls’ Scholarship (RWGS)
REWOCAM opened its doors in 2013 with the objective of sending rural poor girls in hard-to-reach communities to school. It is not news in Cameroon that girls in those communities have a high rate of dropping out of school due to poverty, forced and early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and the general disregard for girl child education – preference for education is given to the boy child as it is believed that girls are meant for marriage, procreation and care duties and nothing more. In 2014/2015 academic year, the scholarship scheme for girls kicked off effectively with 7 girls who were sponsored by the Founder and CEO of Rescue Women Cameroon and her Facebook followers. By the end of 2017/2018 academic year, with funds from Global Pearls Inc., USA, REWOCAM had a record high 120 girls who were on full academic scholarship and they were doing well. The outbreak of the Anglophone crisis/war that climaxed in 2017 led to the suspension of the scholarship scheme as schools were shut down and roads to the villages blocked due to constant gun battles between separatist fighters and government soldiers.
However, as schools are timidly opening their doors in Cameroon and in rural communities, REWOCAM plans to re-start the RWGS scheme this 2022/2023 academic year.
