Skills Training to IDPs, Refugees and survivors of SGBV
So far, since the crisis erupted, REWOCAM has offered skills training (Baking, decoration, tailoring) to 23 women and girls who fled from the war. Before we started this project, we got reports from people, calling on us to do something to support young IDP girls who were roaming the streets of Kumba and doing sex work just to have a meal a day. We had to step in do something. We have also offered training on income generating activities to 75 women and given start-up capital to all of them. At Adagom Refugee Settlement, our skills training center is still open pending the availability of funds to continue with the training that we planned. Currently in Cameroon, there are over 100,000 displaced persons and the weight of the suffering is on women and children. A lot of women have turned to sex work to support their families. This has led to an increase in sexually transmissible infections and a resultant high death rate for IDP and refugee women. We also extend this support to survivors of SGBV. If more of these women are supported, more of their suffering will be alleviated.
